I’ve been a professional educator, both writing and dog training, for over twenty-five years. I’m also award-winning author of a memoir in its second edition, Soul Dog: A Memoir of Spirit, Smarts, and Love.
I have a MA in English Literature and a MFA in Fiction Writing. I’ve worked as a copywriter for an advertising firm, a writing professor, director of two college Writing Centers, a high school English teacher in the International Baccalaureate Program, and a college counselor.
When I applied positive reinforcement dog training techniques to my writing instruction, it revolutionized my students’ learning and their mental health and wellbeing. That’s the Soul Dog Method.

Meet the Rose Dogs
I’ve had some real-life dazzle dogs in my time. Here are my most recent three. Click on their names to learn more. Pictured from top to bottom they are:
- Roo–Mick’s baby brother (yes, he was born with those ears)
- Mick–the tri-color with the sign of the cross on his forehead
- Maisie–the sweet smooth-coated soul
