Why title with DMWYD?
Most of us get our DMWYD titles, and then, if we want the title applied to our AKC-registered dog’s name, we send a copy of the DMWYD certificate to AKC. DMWYD grandfathers to AKC and makes your dog eligible to compete in Stunt Dog Ring Trials, which are also recognized by AKC. AKC Trick Dog titles, however, do not grandfather to DMWYD or make your dog eligible for Stunt Dog Ring Trials. We also enjoy the greater variety of tricks to choose from at each DMWYD level. Plus, many feel the certificate is prettier than the AKC’s. The cost is about the same.
DMWYD has made a handy free “course” that walks you through their process.
To get your DMWYD Trick Dog/Stunt Dog/Animal Actor Titles:
- Examine the requirements for each DWYDM title. Advanced and Expert tricks count 2 points for Novice and Intermediate titles.
- Choose your tricks and make sure you know what’s expected for each trick to qualify. Descriptions of every trick can be found here.
- Make a video of your dog performing the required behaviors. Follow these instructions to make a great video submission. If you would like help, you can get personalized feedback from me.
- When you have everything you need and have checked and double-checked, then and only then it’s time to submit. Sending incomplete submissions or in any way failing to follow directions can waste my time and yours. When you’re ready, email a link to your video or playlist here or you can post it and tag me in the Magic Dog Tricks Spark Team on Facebook. Be sure to include your name, your dog’s name, the DMWYD title you’re attempting (e.g. Intermediate), a list of the tricks and their point values (e.g. fetch-to-hand 1 point, weave poles 2 points), and don’t forget the link to your YouTube video or playlist! If you’re submitting for your Animal Actor title, label each behavior from the level you’re working on, and include any other documents required (e.g. resume, photos, vet records) and make sure the dog’s name, the title, and the checklist items are clear.
- After I’ve evaluated and approved your video as your Certified Trick Dog Instructor, Stunt Dog Judge, or Animal Actor Evaluatior you can submit your application to DMWYD here. But are you a visual learner? Watch this video on how to submit below, courtesy of trainer extraordinaire, Mel Lucas (follow her on Instagram @good.boy.godric).
